As member of the Wesleyan Church of Houghton, she served as secretary to the Elder board and was a very active member, serving in the church she enjoyed so well.

Edna was a professor and chair of the Education Department at Houghton College from 1988-1996. After her retirement she worked for the New York State Education Department in area schools. Edna also worked for the National Educational Department in work related to No Child Left Behind Act evaluating schools seeking national funds. Edna earned her undergraduate degree at Southern Illinois University, her Masters Degree from Northern Colorado, and her Ph.D. from the University of Alabama. Edna began her teaching career in 1960 teaching until 1966 in East St. Louis, Illinois. She then moved with her husband and family and taught in the Palisade, Nebraska schools from 1966-1970. With the next family move, Edna taught in Northglenn, Co., at Huron Junior High from 1970-78. She and her husband then moved to Ecuador to serve at the Alliance Academy from 1978-83, where she was principal of the school while her husband, Dale, was the school Chaplain and counselor. In 1983, the family returned to the states, where Edna completed her doctoral studies in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and then moved to Cleveland, TN where she served first as principal at Cleveland High School and then as principal of an elementary school, achieving the first district elementary school accredited by the Southern States Education Office. From this location, Dale and Edna next moved to Belfast, NY where she was Chair of Education and Recreation Department at Houghton College.
