If we ask

If we ask
by Joel Howard

I'm a little shy
My face bashful
Sulked and silly
Should be shining
I haven't seen you
In quite some time
All this distance
Makes me shy

If we ask
God would part waters
God would part oceans
God would calm storms
If we ask
God would move mountains
God would return to
Empty quarters
If we ask

When did
A little initiative
Become vindictive
When did it give
Us such nervous stomachs
To call upon him
To bow before him
And cry a tear?

If we ask
God would part waters
God would part oceans
God would calm storms
If we ask
And ask in earnest
He'll join the furnace
And there defend us
If we ask

More and more we see
We have not and don't receive
Because we haven't hoped
That he would bless indeed
Can this be the cure
To all of those infirmed
Knock and know for sure
He will open unto us
He will come and dine with us
If we ask

If we ask
God would lighten every dark place
God would loosen every strong place
God would meet with us face to face
If we ask
God would give us all we could need
God would answer us indeed
God would be with us eternally
If we ask

If we ask
No more tears would stain our souls
But instead would make man whole
As we comfort and behold
If we ask
God would hush the widow's cry
God would heal the blinded eyes
God would harken to our cry
If we ask
