Nothing spectacular

Nothing spectacular
by Joel Howard

Knowing the arms of Christ
Knowing the gentle whispers
of the Father
Seeing the fruits of the Spirit

Needing people
just as much as
Others need others
Being
Just as human
As the next human
Just as broken
As the next human

I remember the first time
I told my 4 year old girl
"Honey, you are broken"
The gasp she gave
Before it was out of my mouth
She had denied it
"Honey, you're not perfect!"
Same gasp, wide-eyes
of disbelief
"Girly, you're a mess"
Daddy don't say that!!!

How often do I live in like manner
Constructing walls around
Compliments that come my way
While batting down constructive
Feedback that comes my way

I don't want to be a person
In every way, I say
I don't want to be just like them
But I am just the same

Lord keep us humble
Lord keep us remembering
Constantly at your feet
On our knees, trembling

There's nothing super-human
About me
There's nothing supernatural
Within me
There's nothing spectacular here
There's nothing spectacular here

And just like Peter, I fear,
Jesus will call out my sin
Ahead of time
And just like Peter, I want
A spectacular washing,
"Not just my feet"
And just like Peter
I'm on my face weeping
Outside the courtyard
While Jesus they're beating

Lord keep us humble
Lord keep us remembering
Constantly at your feet
On our knees, trembling

Knowing the arms of Christ
Knowing the gentle whispers
of the Father
Seeing the fruits of the Spirit

Needing people
just as much as
Others need others
Being
Just as human
As the next human
Just as broken
As the next human
