An open wound

An open wound
by Joel Howard
"Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction." Malachi 4:5-6, ESV

Dad is good
Dad is good
Dad is good
Did I just make you cringe?

Dad is good
Dad is good
Dad is good
Does that sentence make sense at all?
For so many there's a tall wall
Applying who our dads were
to our heavenly Father

And since Adam
Our dads were broken
"Fatherless and oppressed"
Are so familiar to us
But the second Adam
Put an end to them
Now we're left
With an open wound

O the brokenness
O the humanness
O the selfishness
Of our fathers
O the healing
O the mercy
The endless stream
Of the Father

From my younger days
I saw an evil Dad
O through the devil's rage
Saw an evil Dad
Deeper than deep it went
That "we serve an evil Dad"
That "we serve an evil Dad"

How can we say "our Father"
How can we call you "Father"
When we think we serve
An evil Dad?

How can we be the Fathers
And brothers to each other
When all that we have is
An evil Dad?

O the brokenness
O the humanness
O the selfishness
Of our fathers
O the healing
O the mercy
The endless stream
Of the Father

Return the hearts of the fathers
To the sons
Return the hearts of the sons
To their fathers
O Father
